Gordon R. Hall Courthouse
The City wanted to create an aesthetic that was forward looking while making an appropriate civic statement. Primary goals were to find efficiencies by combining the state court facility with the local justice court while providing the required security and creating an environment that feels open and accessible to the community.
Primary challenges included resolving the three circulation systems that exist in every justice facility, specifically providing separation between the public, the court staff, and the defendants in custody and creating the feeling of openness and connection while being certain that security measures were met.
The result was a building filled with light and presence from the street. The detailing in the stone walls and the use of large glazed area provides a contrast in the visual weight of the building while giving a sense of permanence and prominence.
