Gateway Tower West
Envisioned as part of an urban ensemble, the new Gateway Tower West, along with the existing Zions Bank Tower, form a portal from Salt Lake City’s central business district to the LDS Church Campus. Gateway West emphasizes the important urban corridors of South Temple and Main Street by reinforcing intact street edges. At the same time, the tower’s corner at the street intersection is relieved to reveal the Salt Lake LDS Temple to the viewer proceeding north on Main Street.
Organized in a tripartite composition of base, shaft and capital, Gateway West borrows from the traditional design vocabulary of its surrounding context. At the pedestrian level, stainless steel light scones and projecting retail windows capture the viewer’s eye and provide interest. At the shaft, graphically active layering of stainless steel and aluminum curtain wall elements over stone panels achieves depth in the skin and imparts solidity to the façade while emphasizing its verticality. Gateway West is then “peeled away” at the top to reveal a signature roofline and provide an element scaled to be perceptible from a distance.
