Weber State University
Shepherd Student Union
The Shepherd Student Union has become the heart of the Weber State University campus. For years, student groups and organizations were independently functioning in two disconnected buildings, separated by a chasm that has always been one of the campus’ most traveled pedestrian pathways. The design approach was to transform two buildings into one unified and interactive place by inserting a light-infused commons between the two former independent halves. The commons allows students to continue to travel their well-worn campus path through the building, through a warm, rich and enlivened environment where information, study, food, and social opportunities present themselves left and right. Expansive skylights bathe the common space in natural light during the day and act as a lantern at night. A critical strategy was to move previously isolated food service and dining from a disconnected 4th level to the main level. With food and retail opportunities front and center, a variety of dining offerings and atmospheres engage the atrium commons, and student activities are seen throughout all building levels through open railings, stairs, and glass-enclosed spaces.
