Westminster College Student Union
As a small, private campus in an expanding urban area, Westminster College has seen a four-fold increase in its residential population. The need to expand the capacity of the Shaw Student Union and Bookstore became necessary upon completion of a new 400-bed student-housing complex. Driven by the need to increase the capacity of existing food service operations, provide higher quality student services, and encourage interaction among all members of the campus community, the proposed design provides a welcoming identity for those who make campus their home away from home.
Combining renovated student government, student programs, employment services, bookstore, game and meeting areas with an Euro Café food concept creates an active and dynamic environment. By opening an existing brick facade to a panoramic view of historic Converse Hall and Plaza, dining and game areas will be washed with daylight. New outdoor dining areas have added significantly to the activity of the union both night and day. This facility continues to draw people to the union by offering spaces comfortable for individuals and groups alike.
