University of Utah HELIX Building

The University of Utah HELIX Building (Healthcare, Educators, Leaders, and Innovators Complex) is a new 6-story state-of-the-art, 250,000 SF office environment located next to Primary Children’s Eccles Outpatient Services facility. HELIX serves as an office and collaboration space for University of Utah Health faculty and staff.

The building was designed to address a high degree of flexibility. Fundamental to its mission are the primary components of adaptable office modules + collaboration + wellness. As the new home to 10 medical departments & divisions, spaces include focused workspace designed to achieve optimal access to daylighting and views; varying-sized meeting rooms; and amenities including a fitness room, sleep rooms, and bike storage and shower facilities.

HELIX serves as a gateway building, connecting the University of Utah campus to the Medical Station TRAX transit node and a 5-level parking structure. It links the Interdisciplinary Corridor and the campus walkway, bridging upper and lower campus. A 450’ bridge over Mario Capecchi connects HELIX to the Moran Eye Center and hospital campus. The building includes outdoor gathering spaces and entrance plazas. A ground-level café serves TRAX and building patrons.

Design Challenge
EXISTING UTILITIES OF ADJACENT HEALTHCARE FACILITIES
The utility infrastructure modifications required for HELIX posed many challenges for the project team to resolve as existing utilities were critical to the neighboring healthcare buildings. The installation of new utilities without compromising existing services to adjacent hospital facilities was accomplished through intense coordination between the design team, University of Utah’s facilities group, and general contractor. Keeping the project within budget and on schedule was achieved by the team through commitment, collaboration, and creative-thinking.
