Midvale State Street Corridor Study
The Midvale State Street Corridor Study focuses on 2.65 miles of State Street that runs north-south through Midvale City, beginning at 6790 South and ending at Pioneer Avenue. This study works to build on prior efforts of past projects and plans, notably the 2016 Midvale General Plan, Midvale City Active Transportation Plan, WFRC Regional Transportation Plan, WFRC Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy, and Salt Lake City’s Life on State Plan. This study provides direction on urban design, land use, economic development, and active and roadway transportation along the corridor and opportunities for improvements. MHTN led the efforts with Leland Consulting Group, Alta Planning + Design, and Parametrix to develop a thorough planning document addressing the zoning and regulatory environment, potential funding sources, enhanced transportation connections along State Street and adjacent east-west connections, as well as recommendations for flexible placemaking efforts.
The Vision Statement and Guiding Principles for this project focused on making the corridor memorable, welcoming and connected, responsive to development, and aimed for a transparent and equitable engagement process. Another key step in this planning process was analyzing existing conditions to address and improve during the concept and scenario development phase of the process. The plan resulted in multiple demonstration sites to test the density and varying intensities for redevelopment and possible pedestrian connections to transit at key candidate sites. In addition, amended zoning language, a Roadway and Urban Design Toolbox, and recommended phasing that outlines immediate actions ensures the study leads to implementation.
